It was good to be linked to by a blogger remembering his grandfather, Private 53222 Lawrence Tipling. He survived the war, but would never talk about it, to his grandson at least, despite the passage of time. In common with many who survived WW1 he occasionally let slip the odd blackly comic story – a pattern repeated by my father after WW2.
Tipling was wounded in the arm and invalided out in May 1918 with the princely sum of £1 a week pension for life. Do read his grandson’s reflections and more about how life went on for chaps like this, in all its ordinariness.
